NEET 2018 Eligibility criteria

Candidates aspiring to take up NEET UG 2018 must meet the eligibility criteria set by Indian Medical Council Act-1956/Regulations as amended in 2018 and the Dentists Act-1948/Regulations as amended in 2018. The criteria includes age, nationality, academic qualification, number of attempts etc.

NEET eligibility criteria has been revised as per interim orders passed by the Delhi High Court on April 26, 2018. Further clarification on NEET eligibility has been given by Medical Council of India on 24th April, 2018.

During the course of proceedings on 24.04.18 the Medical Council has submitted the following chart whereby a clarification regarding eligibility of various categories of candidates who wish to appear in the NEET-UG-2018 has been submitted to the Hon’ble Division Bench of the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi. It has been directed by the Hon’ble High Court to place the below-mentioned chart for information of all concerned on the website of the Council.

Candidate having qualified 10+2 examination i.e. after 12 years of study, where the last two years of study comprise of Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology and any other elective subject with English from a Recognized Board. Candidates must have regular, coterminus, simultaneous teaching and training in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 11th & 12th alongwith practicals in Classroom mode in a Regular School Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th, hence Eligible
Candidates who have studied Biology / Biotechnology as 6th subject in Class 11th & 12th including practicals alongwith the other mandatory subjects with practicals in Classroom mode in a Regular School and possess a consolidated pass mark-sheet of Class 11th & 12th of a Recognized Board stating marks of all six subjects including Biology/ Biotechnology. Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th ,hence Eligible
Candidates having studied Class 11th & Class 12th in Classroom Mode in a Regular School but have failed in a subject in class 12th for which he / she shall take the Compartment Examination from the Recognized Board to which the School is affiliated and successfully clears the Compartment Examination. Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th , hence Eligible.
Candidates studying in Classroom Mode in a Regular School but fail either in Class 11th and / or Class 12th shall reappear in Class 11th and / or Class 12th from a Recognized Board to which the School is affiliated and successfully clears Class 11th and / or Class 12th Examination. In cases where the Regular School issues Class 11th and / or Board issues Class 12th mark-sheet as failed and thereafter when the candidate reappears in Class 11th and / or Class 12th Examinationand the Recognized Board treats him as a Private Candidate. Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th , hence Eligible.
However, the candidate would be required to place both the fail and pass marksheets of Class 11th and / or Class 12th before the Counselling Authorities
Candidates studying in Classroom Mode in a Regular School in Class 11th & Class 12th but re-appearing in examination for improvement of performance on account of various reasons and the Recognized Board treats him/her as a regular student. Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th , hence Eligible.
Candidates who have studied Class 11th with the requisite subjects / practicals in Classroom Mode in a Regular School but subsequently after gap year study Class 12th with the requisite subjects / practicals in Classroom Mode in a Regular School. Meets the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals taken together in Class 11th & 12th , hence Eligible.
Candidates who have studied 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and after passing 10+2 have appeared with Biology / Biotechnology as an Additional Subject of the same Board in the subsequent year and have passed it Do not meet the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals takentogether in Class 11th & 12th, hence Ineligible.
Candidates who have not attended Classroom Teaching and Training in a Regular School in Class 11th and / or Class 12th i.e. NIOS / State Open Schools & Private Candidates Do not meet the test of regular and continuous two years of study of Physics / Chemistry / Biology or Biotechnology alongwith practicals takentogether in Class 11th & 12th, hence Ineligible.
Classroom attendance is not required by NIOS/State Open Schools & Private Candidates.

NEET 2018 Eligibility Criteria

1. Age Limit:

  • Candidateswho wish to take up NEET exam must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS course.
  • The upper age limit for NEET exam is 25 years as on the date of examination. And relaxation of 5 years is given to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC category and persons entitled for reservation under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act,2016.

2. Number of attempts:

Previously the NEET exam could be attempted for 3 times but a new rule has been made. So now, there is No Cap for number of attempts.

3. NRI candidates:

Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizen of India (OCIs), Persons with Indian Origin (PIOs) & Foreign Nationals are eligible to appear in NEET UG-2018.

An official notification has been released by CBSE regarding equivalency of Class XII for NRI/Foreign candidates. The statement is as follows - “Any other examination which, in scope and standard is found to be equivalent to the intermediate science examination of an Indian University/Board, taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology including practical test in each of these subjects and English".

Going by the above statement candidates who have completed their schooling outside India and whose education is equivalent to that of Class XII are eligible for admission to MBBS course. AIU is the authority, which is giving equivalency for Class XII qualification from other countries.

4. Eligibility for seats under the control of States/Deemed Universities/Central Universities/ESIC & AFMC/BHU & AMU/Central pool quota:

  • Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Oversees Citizen of India (OCIs) & Foreign Nationals will be eligible for admission in Medical/Dental Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institution and the Government of India. These aspirants are eligible for 15% All India Quota Seats.
  • Foreign nationals can confirm their eligibility from the concerned Medical/Dentals college/state.

5. Eligibility for 15% All India Quota Seats:

  • Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizen of India (OCIs), Persons with Indian Origin (PIOs) & Foreign Nationals are eligible for 15% All India Quota seats.
  • Candidates from J & K, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

    1. Students from State of J & K are NOT ELIGIBLE for 15% all India quota seats as State of J&K has opted out of All India Scheme since its inception. If they claim eligibility, they must submit online Self Declaration which will be generated and printed automatically along with confirmation page for the record and must be presented during counseling.
    2. The Online Self Declaration of the candidates will be verified at the time of counseling and if found to be false at any time, the candidature/admission of such candidates shall be canceled and criminal proceedings may be initiated against them.
    3. Further, candidates from the state of J & K can appear in NEET (UG) for admission to Private Medical/Dental Colleges or any Private/Deemed University and Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune subject to the fulfillment of eligibility conditions.
    4. The Government of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana vide their letter no.13021/C1/2016 dated 06.11.2017 & letter no.7072/C1/2017 dated 07.11.2017 respectively have informed that Government of Andhra Pradesh and Government of Telangana have decided to join and contribute to the All India Quota seats. So candidates from Anddhra Pradesh & Telangana are ELIGIBLE for 15% All India Quota Seats.

6. Qualifications And Qualifying Examination Codes:

Candidates who wants to appear for NEET 2018 must possess the required qualification and required marks prescribed the CBSE Board, please read below for qualifying exam code

Code Description
01 A candidate who is appearing in the qualifying examination, i.e., 12th Standard in 2018, whose result is awaited, may apply and take up the said test but he/she shall not be eligible for admission to the MBBS or BDS, if he/she does not pass the qualifying examination with the required pass percentage of marks at the time of first round of Counselling.
02 The Higher/Senior Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher/Senior Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years study, the last two years of such study comprising of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-technology (which shall include practical tests in these subjects) and Mathematics or any other elective subject with English at a level not less than the core course for English as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training after introduction of the 10+2+3 educational structure as recommended by the National Committee on Education. Provided that 2 year of regular and continuous study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-technology taking together shall be required at 10+2 level for all the candidates. Candidates who have passed 10+2 from Open Schools or as private candidate shall not be eligible to appear for NEET (UG). Furthermore, study of Biology/Bio-technology as an additional subject at 10+2 level also shall not permissible. NOTE: where the course content is not as prescribed for 10+2 education structure of the National Committee, the candidates will have to undergo a period of one year pre - professional training before admission to the Medical Colleges.
03 The Intermediate/Pre-degree Examination in Science of an Indian University/Board or other recognized examining body with Physics, Chemistry, Biology /Bio-technology (which shall include practical test in these subjects) and also English as a compulsory subject
04 The Pre-professional/Pre-medical Examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio technology & English after passing either the Higher Secondary Examination or the Pre University or an equivalent examination. The Pre-professional/Pre-medical examination shall include practical test in these subjects and also English as a compulsory subject.
05 The first year of the three years‟ degree course of a recognised University with Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology including practical tests in these subjects provided the examination is a University Examination and candidate has passed the earlier qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Bio-technology with English at a level not less than a core course.
06 B.Sc. Examination of an Indian University provided that he/she has passed the B.Sc. Examination with not less than two of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology)/Bio-technology and further that he/ she has passed the earlier qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
07 Any other examination which in scope and standard (Last 02 years of 10+2 Study comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology; Which shall include practical test in these subjects) is found to be equivalent to the Intermediate Science Examination of an Indian University/Board, taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology including practical tests in each of these subjects and English.

NEET 2018 NIOS and Private Candidates:

In view of the orders of Hon’ble High Court, Delhi, the NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) and Private candidates who were ineligible to write NEET exam, are now eligible to take up NEET 2018 examination. Students from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), state-level Open School Boards and Private candidates had expressed concerns regarding what they should fill in Class XI details fields, as they directly write Class XII exams without appearing for Class XI.

In order to fill the gap, CBSE issued notice on how to fill the details. The candidates can now submit the details as suggested below under the information of Class XI:
